Oxford - East Cotswolds
Oxford - home to the oldest University in England - a city with a small heart, where the university's colleges, with their magnificent buildings and spires, are clustered. The city has a vibrant shopping centre and there are beautiful walks along the River Thames, which runs through the centre of the city.
Just north of Oxford is the small town of Woodstock with Blenheim Palace, the ancestral home of Winston Churchill, which was built for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in recognition of his great victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. The Palace, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, and one of the finest examples of English Baroque, is set in over 2000 acres of parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown.
